Public Art Projects in A Community: The Ile-Ife Prominent Female Monumental Sculptures.

The purpose of this study is to examine the formalistic and historic content of Ife female monumental sculptures and reveal their meanings and functions. In so doing, descriptive research method was adopted. The population of the study comprises of men and women within the environment of the selected monumental sculptures sites. Thirty randomly selected samples were administered self-constructed questionnaire and interview guide was the major instrument for the study. This paper examines the significance of monumental sculptures in relation to Yoruba mythology with a particularly attention to two prominent Ife female sculptures and with a view to establish their socio-cultural, economic and humanitarian context. The paper reveals the two analyzed sculptures as having allegoric and iconic symbolism. Key words: Monuments, Sculpture, Functions, Meaning and Mythology
