The Use of Clay for Teaching and Learning in Nigerian Secondary Schools:Art Today for Tomorrow.

Many children are naturally oriented to direct learning and expression through three-dimensional experiences which can be developed in many ways. if one considers experiences of this world, it is in the understanding of the three-dimensional forms that much of our knowledge is based. This can be illustrated in the sense of touch, discussion, visual-go-round and space occupied by objects in the environment. Building, furniture, household effect, toys, animals, human beings, trees, seeds, shells and the richness of the natural environment are but a few of the many possible examples of three-dimensional expressive areas open for exploration. It is a pity that these three 'Rs' – reading, writing and arithmetic made areas. It is therefore, well worth questioning why then, the absence in the two and three-dimensional arts emphasis in our schools today. It is even observed by the writer that some secondary schools never indulge in three-dimensional activities in the teaching of art. Ironically, the three-dimensional art is found in most syllabi/course outlines of our schools. The truth is that if is taught at all, it is very minimal. This paper discusses the factors facing the teaching of the three-dimensional art or design in schools and focuses on the use of clay. The problems, limitations, availability, preparation, handling, methods of design and construction are looking into. With the prospect that this medium can offer as a good foundation for reversing the three-dimensional neglect.
