Online group work and its effect on students’ engagement and academic performance in Kwara State University, Malete- Nigeria

The study was a case study that investigated the influence of online group work on out-of-school engagement and the academic performance of students at Kwara State University, Nigeria. 200 students assigned to control and treatment groups were randomly selected from two schools (Humanities and Education for the study. The groups were respectively given online individual and online group tasks to perform. Thereafter, a class test on the same task was administered on the two groups. A questionnaire tagged “online Group Work Engagement Questionnaire (OGEQ)was designed and used. The three hypotheses generated were analyzed using T-test statistic at 0.5 level of significance level. The results of the findings showed among others that, there was a significant difference between the engagement of students om the online group task and online individual task. Also, there was a significant difference in the performance of students who were involved in the online group work and those who were involved in online individual tasks. Lastly, the results of the findings revealed that there was no significant difference between the engagement of male students and female students in online group tasks. On the basis of the findings, it was recommended among others, that, lecturers should give more online individual tasks to promote students’ engagement in their own learning. However, whenever an online group task is given by a lecturer, a follow-up test for the individual students on the same task should be given as this would prompt them to be more engaged in any online task. This is because effective holistic learning requires full involvement of the students.
