The issue of leadership is a thing of concern, especially in Nigerian tertiary institutions with Art Departments in focus. This however, has a positive or negative effect on the smooth running of this sector of an institution in the process of nation building. This paper takes a look at the concept leadership and leadership styles as it applies to tertiary education. Qualitative research approach was adopted in the review of literature in combination with personal experience garnered as a former member of management team in the author’s last place of work. The views of few scholars on the issue of leadership were also considered with suggestions that could assist prospective leaders saddled with the responsibility of leadership at that level.
