Contemporary Naija Hip-Hop Dance Styles.

AN OVERVIEW OF SELECTED CONTEMPORARY ‘NAIJA’ HIP-HOP DANCE STYLES Abstract. The study is an overview of selected contemporary ‘Naija’ hip-hop dance styles, focusing on periods, styles, similarities and contrast. The methodology used in this research is qualitative; through analysis, direct and indirect observations, literary texts, video clips and internet resources. Theoretical frame work is based on Cunningham’s keys ideas. The twenty first century hip- hop Nigerian dance styles ushered in originality, creativity, powerful expressive singing, self-expressions, and great imagination of artistic qualities in contemporary hip-hop dance expressions. Five youths were interviewed from Kaduna metropolis; respondents indicated that contemporary dance is primarily in the hands of youths of age’s 10-45years old irrespective of gender. Respondents are of the opinion that dancers in Nigeria do not earn much compared to their counter parts in the United States of America, inferior pay rates and flabby conditions of service are noticed if ever a dancer gets hired temporarily. Respondents also mention the influence of the use of drugs on some dancers. There are lots of dance expressions in vogue so it is not possible for the researcher to document all, therefore the study will mention fifteen but will only examine three in-depth. Dance as a communication connects the dancer to different types of affections and aura. The researcher concluded that dance is a significant feature of any culture and an attribute of ethnic groups and nationalities. Culture in any given society is not static; it experiences change, so it evolves. The researcher recommends that it is important to memorialize these dance representations for posterity.
