Investigative Study into Works of Female Hausa Cap Embroiderers in Paki Village,Zaria,Kaduna State.

An Investigative Study into The Works Of Female Hausa Cap Embroiderer ABSTRACT The problem of this study is that Scholars like Heathcote, anthropologists, historians and others have discussed Hausa cap embroidery, but have excluded Hausa female cap embroiderers from their researches, hence the need to establish the existence of the female embroiderers and their works. Another problem is that; there is an in balance and inequality noticed in the making and cataloguing of female Hausa male embroidered caps, unlike their male counterparts whose works have been catalogued. This study is not aware of any research work on the female Hausa cap embroiderers. The objectives of the study include to identify the characteristics of the work of female cap embroiderers, reveal the stylistic visual idioms of the Hausa female cap embroiderers, examine the quantity and quality of embroidered caps by females. The methodology used in this research is qualitative; through analysis, non-participant observations, archival materials, oral interviews, literary texts, and internet resources. Conceptual frame work adapted for the study is the gender theory. Part of the findings established includes that, Hausa Female cap embroiderers cut across all ages. They are Hausa by language and ethnicity. They are Muslims by religious affiliation, and the Hausa female embroiderers exist and are involved in the art of handcrafted Hausa caps for male adornment. The females are not involved in machine cap embroidery. Some of the factors influencing this order include; economic inequality, dependency, biological issues and responsibilities, religion, region, tradition, beliefs and lack of intense inquiry. This study submits that female Hausa cap embroiderers exist and the embroiderer’s signature in Nigeria is part and parcel of its cultural expression. Keywords: Cap, Embroiderers, Females, Gender, Hausa.
