TRADITIONAL YORUBA NAMES: A CASE STUDY OF THE EFFECTS ON YORUBA SPEAKERS Abstract This study submits that traditional Yoruba names in Nigeria are part and parcel of Yoruba cultural expression. The methodology used in this research is qualitative; through analysis, non-participant observations, archival materials, interviews, literary texts, and internet resources. The population of Yoruba speakers is infinite and the non-probability sampling also known as incidental or volunteer sampling method was adapted for the oral interview due to the nature of research undertaken. A two item research instrument (questions) was administered in English language orally for accuracy to fifty (50) Yoruba speakers drawn from Kaduna, Ilorin and Lagos in Nigeria. The data obtained was analyzed based on qualitative methodology. The objectives of this research is to high lights the significance, meanings, implications and effects of traditional Yoruba names artistically, psychologically, environmentally, socially and philosophically amongst the Yoruba speakers. Yoruba names have been documented by a lot of foreign, multi locals and historians. This study serves as an additional documentation of literary source on traditional Yoruba names. The author also recommended the following; Yoruba speakers must see that traditional names do not palled into insignificance. Miss-spelt traditional names due to modernization, internet incursion, and residual negative effects of colonization should be discouraged amongst the Yoruba youths. Meaningful aspect of our culture including traditional Yoruba names must not go into extinction. Younger generation of Yoruba speakers must be taught how to embrace their names because of what it represents. Catalogue of traditional Yoruba names must be reviewed and up dated from time to time for record purposes and for posterity.
