1 | Terminologies for CoronaVirus-Related Concepts in Standard Yorùbá |
Understanding a concept is key to its appreciation. Lack of understanding of the enormity of the dangers of COVID-19 by Nigerians has given room for the disease to spread in Nigeria in a way it would not have spread had there been a more widespread understanding of it. One of the challenges the country has faced so far, is the utter disbelief on the part of some of its citizens that the disease exists. The denial of the existence of COVID-19 is in and of itself as dangerous as the virus. The reason for this denial could be linked to the fact that, most of the terms used in relation to it are alien to the majority of the populace. Hence, the belief that the virus is an alien virus that only affects “others”. By rendering COVID-19-related terms in Standard Yorùbá, this sociolinguistic study will bring about an understanding that is not just close to home, but also one which offers a great deal of clarity to those members of the populace. Using Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), interviews and participant observation as data elicitation tools, this paper provides terms in Standard Yorùbá for COVID-19-related concepts with the dual aim of bringing about an understanding of the disease to Yorùbá speakers who lack any form of proficiency in the English Language while also expanding the lexicon of the Yorùbá Language in such a way that the language can succinctly capture all the linguistic angles that the corona virus has brought about.
