1 | Women-Related Proverbs and the Yorùbá World-View |
Abstract In the traditional Yorùbá society, women are of great importance. Women cannot be underestimated in almost every sphere of life, be it in the public or the private (Ajíbádé 2009:15).Women are mysterious, naturally and vastly different from men in appearance, character and behaviour. They are everywhere seen physically in dreams, at work, at play, at workshop, at home, on the farms and market places; yet, as conspicuous as they are, people’s views about them differ from place to place, especially culturally (Ilésanmí 2013:xii-xiii). All these are represented in Yorùbá proverbs related to female or womanhood. This is because, the daily activities and societal relationships of people gives birth to proverbs. The aim of this work is to explicate some selected female-related proverbs in the bids to actualise the philosophy of Yorùbá people on the position of female/women in the Yorùbá nation from a pragmatic perspective. The researcher, as a native speaker of Yorùbá language used some data from his knowledge of Yorùbá proverbs, personal observations, consultations and interactions with elders and some published texts on Yorùbá proverbs. The theoretical framework adopted is the Sociological theory of literature because it is through the interactions of people in the society that brings about utterances among which are proverbs which are formed by elders. The findins of the research show that proverbs about women in Yorùbá society highlight both the importance and negative traits of women which are predominantly drawn from male centred perception of women’s role in the society. This paper concluded that derogatory proverbs about womanhood are borne out of partriachal social order which assesment is not totally accurate as it would amount to over generalization of the faults of some women. | Hakeem Ọláwálé (Ph.D) | Vol. 10. | journal | 2020-01-10 |
