1 | POSTULATING ISLAMIC OPTIONS FOR ELIMINATION OF ECONOMIC CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA |
Economic corruption is a widely known social malady in the human society. The nefarious practice transcends geographical boundaries. However, efforts to eliminate the crime differ from one society to another. Alas! in the contemporary Nigerian society, economic corruption have gotten to an unimaginable and frightening level. The ‘endemic cankerous disease’ which has infected almost all the established institutions desired for human progress and national development seems to defy solution in Nigeria despite all efforts to combat it. The malaise provokes the aspiration of this study with a view to advancing a more effective control mechanism. The research findings reveal that the Nigerian government at various times made efforts to fight corruption but the crime remained a recurring decimal; whereas, in such nations where moral rectitude and Godliness prevail, the sharp practices are seemingly non-existent or are at the barest level. This explains the potency of religion in curbing the malady. The paper, therefore, examines the elimination strategies of the economic corruption in Nigeria with a view to seeking more viable options from Islam whose guidance is divine oriented, universal and perpetual with proven efficiency. The research methodology involves interview, literary appraisal and exploration of internet technology. The paper concludes with recommendations that there is the need for moral re-invention of the citizenry imbued with religious orientation while on the other hand the government should be more pro-active in its bid to combat corruption.
