1 | DA'WAH AND ITS PRACTICE IN CONTEMPORARY NIGERIA: RECIPE FROM PROPHET MUḤAMMAD’S MODEL |
Da'wah is literally the art of calling or inviting to the way of Allah. This art includes the advocacy and propagation of belief in the unity of Allah and submission to His will. Da'wah practice dates back to the era of the Prophets and Messengers who were appointed by Allah with the mandate to proclaim the divine message. Mention could be made of Prophets Nūḥ, Ṣāliḥ, Ibrāhim, Mūsā and Ῑsā among others who engaged in da'wah in various nations to which they were sent. Obviously, each of them had his approaches and challenges in the dissemination of the divine message. Prophet Muḥammad (SAW), the seal of the divine Prophets, was sent not only to his own nation (Arabia) but to the entire world. His approach to da'wah was humane, friendly, logical and inspiring laden with wisdom and beautiful exhortations. Hence, his accomplishment in his da'wah activities was unprecedented. The cease of Prophethood notwithstanding, da'wah activities continue among Muslims of the subsequent generations till today. Apparently, the propagation exercise has been full of intrigues and challenges given the contemporary situations. Hence, there were the traditional and contemporary approaches to da'wah. The paper observed that in the contemporary time, discrepancies exist between the Prophetic subtle approaches to da'wah and the hostile manners of some modern du'āt. In this regard, the paper makes a survey of the practice of da'wah in contemporary Nigeria with particular focus on its approaches and challenges vis-à-vis guide from the Prophet Muḥammad’s model. For da'wah efficiency in the contemporary Nigeria, the paper recommends a re-orientation of the new generation du'āt; profound knowledge as pre-requisite for da'wah; and proper co-ordination of da'wah activities to protect its sanctity.
