RELIGIOUS FANATICISM AND ITS IMPLICATIONS ON THE SECURITY CHALLENGES IN NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF ILORIN METROPOLIS

It is more often than not established that, religion occupies a pre-eminent position in human life, and in the well-being of the society. In essence, it guides man towards a blissful life on one hand, and inspires righteousness in the society, through the spirit of godliness on the other hand. This same religion is being manipulated by the people for some ulterior motives which include, but not limited to, economic exploitation, desperation for leadership, craziness for high social recognition and reckless seduction of women. By and large, religion has been transformed from being a source of peace to an instrument of violence and discord. Most of the time, this situation emanated from religious fanaticism which inevitably imposed threats on security status of Nigeria as a multi-faith nation. This precariousness prompted the present paper on the implications of religious fanaticism on the security challenges in Nigeria with a particular focus on Ilorin being a renowned Islamic city. It was observed that religious fanaticism often induces religious and security crises. Although, despite its heterogeneous composition, Ilorin had been peaceful and united on the basis of Islamic brotherhood, religious crises and insecurity are looming given the influx of people of all manners and effects of urbanization. The paper, therefore, concludes on the notes of necessary precautions against fanaticism. It recommends that religious propagation should be re-strategized and appropriate sanctions should be imposed on religious fanatics. Multiple approaches such as interview, observation and literary appraisal are adopted for the study. Keywords: Religious Fanaticism, Security Challenges, Violence, Ilorin, Jihad
