ABERRATIONS IN THE OBSERVANCE OF 'IDDAH AMONG THE YORUBA MUSLIMS IN NIGERIA

'Iddah is a provision of the Islamic law imposed on a woman upon the termination of her marriage contract. Among other things, it is prescribed on a divorcee or a widow in order to affirm social identity and prevent any social violence following the dissolution of marriage as well as ensuring peaceful co-existence in the society. To that extent, the Islamic law prescribes regulations on the concept and practice of the 'iddah. However, as usual with several other aspects of the Islamic law that border on socio-religious matters, the observance of 'iddah has been affected by other extraneous factors among the Yoruba Muslims thereby prompting aberrations. Pertinently, this paper desires to study the provisions of Islamic law in respect of 'iddah with a view to identifying areas of transgression in its practice among the Yoruba Muslims in Nigeria. Findings in the study indicate that the practice of 'iddah among the Yoruba Muslims had been influenced by the traditional cultural heritage, sheer ignorance, misconception or willful transgression. Hence, the paper attempts to re-orientate the Muslim faithful, especially the women, on the requirements of the Islamic law on the observance of 'iddah with a view to sifting the shaft from the grain. The research methods adopted include interview, observation and literary analysis. The paper concludes with recommendations on the need for proper education of the Yoruba Muslims, especially the women, on the Islamic regulations concerning the observance of 'iddah. Keywords: 'Iddah, 'Iddatu’ṭ Ṭalāq, 'Iddat’ul Wafāt, Divorcee, Widow, Aberrations
