Out School Education: Exploration in The Visual Arts.

There are continual rise and flourishing of itinerant Arts and Crafts shops in Nigeria. These shops and stores can be found in several urban and semi urban areas across the nation. The art works found in these shops (stores) include; Painting, Sculptures, Textiles materials, Leather works, Calabash Carvings, Basketry, Metal Works, Pottery, Glass Millinery, Brass and Copper Works, Bronze and Ivory Works, Paper Crafts, Photography among others. The shops are usually owned by business entrepreneurs who possess different qualification, skills and certificate at different levels. A large number have formal certification to guarantee their qualifications. Thus, the aim of this discourse is to focus on insights retrieved from previous studies by other scholars on the role played by ‘out- of- school’ (informal experience) on visual arts educational programme. The aim likewise seeks to explore the views of selected artists on the quality of ‘out- of- school’ (informal art education) programme. The outcome of the exploration has observed that informal (out school) visual experience compliment the formal (in-school) experiences. and it was established that most visual artists that passes through formal training (in-school), enroll in ‘out- of- school’ art education centers to enhance their art training hands on practical skills. Therefore, it concluded that informal art programmes be carefully integrated into formal system without depriving its core attributes but encourages it to adopt necessary improvements.
