Values Of Arts Education On Educational Practice In Nigeria Secondary Schools

The historical development of art education supports its consideration as a distinct and sovereign discipline with a reasonable sophisticated philosophy and a well-defined practice in the schools. Art is a central discipline in our culture, useful as leisure time activities, segment of the desirable polish of the middle and the upper classes, and ideally as the vital task of developing a mature and intelligent citizenry. The teaching, learning and the misunderstanding of art in Nigerian schools have been frustrating. It has kept arts in disfavour and treated with neglect as a subject in the curricular of secondary schools. Art has been denied its rightful place in the curricular designed to develop and educate the students. As a result, the teaching and learning of art have never had the opportunity to effectively contribute meaning fully to the education and development of the Nigerian students. Art is a discipline of study in itself with its own histories and practices yet it is also increasingly recognized for the ways it promotes learning for various students and in various ways. This paper attempts to reveal some of the qualities of art and how it affects other academic subjects. WORD COUNT; 197 KEY WORD; Art, Education and other subjects.
