INFLUENCES OF PEER ACCEPTANCE AND ESTEEM ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILILTY IN IBADAN. OLUWABUKOLA CHRISTIANAH DADA Ph.D DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATION KWARA STATE UNIVERSITY, MALETE, NIGERIA. & AMOS ODELEYE EMMANUEL ALAYANDE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION OYO, NIGERIA

The study examined the influence of per acceptance and self-esteem on the academic achievement of students with learning disabilities in Ibadan. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design of correlation type. The participants included 300 students with learning disabilities who were randomly selected from twelve secondary schools from Akinyele local Government Area of Oyo state. Four research instruments were adopted for the study, which include: Pupils Rating Scale by Mykleburst, coefficient alpha of 0.91 and reliability coefficient of 0.74, (that was used in screening the students with learning disabilities). Peer influence scale with reliability co-efficient of a =71 by veisiwe, self esteem scale with alpha 83 by Roseberg, Academic achievement TEST coefficient yielded 0.72 and 0.69 for English and mathematics respectively. Pearson product moment correlations and multiple regressions analysis were employed to analyze the data generated, while three research questions were raised and answered in the study. The outcome of the study revealed that there was positive relationship between the independent variables (peer acceptance and self-esteem) and the dependent variable (academy achievement). It was concluded that peer acceptance and self-esteem related with academic achievement of students with learning disabilities and therefore, recommends that the self-esteem of students with learning disabilities should be enhanced since it made highest contribution to the prediction to the academic achievement. Also, school psychologist should utilize therapist that could enhance self esteem of the students with learning disabilities so as to improve academically.
