A Comparative Study of Hafs and Warsh Modes of Recitation of Qur’an

Recitation of the Qur’an is done in seven different ways all of which were approved by the Prophet. Those that are prominent among the Muslims of West Africa countries are recitation of Imam Nafi’ (d.159) which was transmitted by his student- Imam Uthman bn Sa’id Al-Misriy popularly called Warsh (d.197) and that of Imam ‘Asim (127) which was transmitted by his student- Imam Hafs bn Sualyman Al-kufiyy (180). This paper, however, gives comparative study of recitations of Hafs and Warsh. As the area of differences is significantly small when compared with the area of similarities, hence, the areas of differences are focused. The paper, after the introduction, gives biography of the reciters under study and differences in their modes of recitation before the conclusion.
