Analytical Study of Al-Qadi’s Poetry on Qalun and Warsh Mode of Recitation of the Qur’an

Recitation of the Qur’an is done in ten ways all of which were approved by the Prophet. They were named after the prominent scholars of each recitation. One of them is recitation of Imam Nafic (d.159) which was transmitted by his students- Imam Uthman bn Sa’id Al-Misriy popularly called Warsh (d.197) and Abu Musa, Isa bn Mina-l-Asamm Al- Misriyy popularly called Qalun (d. 220 AH). Despite the fact that their studentships on recitation originate from the same center, the two reciters differ in some occasions. The recitation of Qalun is popular in Libya, Tunisia and parts of Qatar while that of Warsh is known in Algeria, Morocco, parts of Tunisia, West Africa and Sudan. This paper, however, gives comparative study of recitations of Qalun and Warsh. As the area of differences is significantly small when compared with the area of similarities, hence, the areas of differences are focused as contained in a forty lines of Al-Qadi poetry. The paper, after the introduction, gives biography of Al-Qadi, Qalun and Warsh before the analysis and conclusion.
