A Study of Ḥadīth Terminologies in the Panegyric Poetry of ’As-Subbān

Ḥadīth, as an appendage of the Qur’an, refers to the reports of statements, actions and tacit approvals of the Prophet Muhammad, which stands as the second primary source of Islam and Islamic learning. It is a known fact that Scholars of ḥadīth developed the science of authentication with a view of protecting the Prophetic Traditions from containing false information. Thus the scientific development in the study of sunnah has led to the classification of ḥadīth based on the status of its ’isnād (chain of narration) and matn (content of the ḥadīth). In this process certain ḥadīth terminologies were employed to depict to the scholastic world, the genuine Traditions from the concoction. As- Subbān, a renowned scholar of Shāficī school and a great muḥaddith (scholar of Ḥadīth) of the 13th century of hijrah, mentioned some of these terms in his sixteen stanza of Madh poetry. It should be noted that Madh is genre of lyric poem dealing with theme of praise. The poet, however, used the terms in their literal sense to present a concise rendition. An attempt is, therefore, made in this paper, to explain the technical usages of those scientific hadith terminologies.
