Effect of organomineral and NPK fertilizer application on growth and yield of grain amaranth (Amaranthus cruentus L.)

Pot experiments were conducted in the screen house of College of Agriculture, Kwara State University, Malete, Ilorin, Nigeria, to evaluate the effect of organomineral fertilizers on growth and yield of Amaranthus cruentus and its residual effect on soil. The treatments consisted of control (Zero addition), Sunshine Organomineral fertilizer Grade A at the rate of 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 t/ha and NPK 15-15-15 at the rate of 45 and 90 kgN/ha. The experiments were laid out in completely randomized design replicated three times thrice. Pre- and post-cropping soil samples were taken and analyzed for physical and chemical properties. Growth parameters of fresh shoot and dry shoot weight were evaluated at weekly intervals. The results of this investigation revealed that Sunshine fertilizer at 4.5 t/ha had a better performance on growth parameters when compared with NPK at 45 and 90 kgN/ha respectively. The values of Amaranthus cruentus wet and dry shoot weight were 7.0 and 4.1 g respectively with 4.5 t/ha Sunshine Organomineral fertilizer Grade A and these were not significantly (p< 0.05) different from that of NPK treatment (45 and 90 kgN/ha) after the first cropping. Residual effect of wet and dry shoot weight values obtained from 4.5 t/ha Sunshine Organomineral fertilizer Grade A was also not significantly (p< 0.05) different from that of NPK values. Thus organomineral fertilizer application could be seen as a better option for improving nutrient use efficiency for Amaranthus cruentus production.
