COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF ORGANIC FERTILIZERS WITH NPK FERTILIZER ON THE PERFOMANCE OF TOMATO (Lycopersicon esculentum L)

The high cost of mineral fertilizer has prompted the use of organic fertilizers by farmers in Nigeria. This study therefore investigated the effects of three shrub legumes leaves, poultry manure, city refuse and NPK on the growth and yield of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). The treatments; Poultry manure (PM), Gliricidia sepium (GS), Leucaena leucocephala (LL), Senna siamea (SS) and City refuse (CR) were applied at the rate of 10 t/ha respectively, NPK at the rate of 30kg N/ha and control. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. Data were analyzed using ANOVA Test. Application of organic and inorganic fertilizers significantly (p < 0.05) influenced plant height, number of leaves and fruit yield of tomato. PM at 10 t/ha had significant effect (p <0.05) on the growth and yield of tomato. The highest yield (11.5 t/ha) was recorded from plants treated with poultry manure followed by Leucaena leucocephala (8.5 t/ha), while control gave the least (1.9 t / ha). Tomato yield values obtained from PM at 10 t/ha was also significantly (p< 0.05) higher than that of NPK values. Thus, it could be concluded that the use of Poultry manure has potential in improving the growth and fruit yield of tomato.
