An Empirical Study of Relationship between Government Expenditure and Agricultural Sector Growth in Nigeria

This study makes a modest contribution to the debates by empirically analyzing the relationship between government expenditure on the agricultural sector and its contribution to economic growth, using time series data from 1986 to 2016 Ordinary Least Square was used in the regression analysis and secondary data were sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin (Various Issues), National Bureau of Statistics among others. The empirical findings revealed that Government Expenditure on Agriculture (GEA), Deposit Money Bank Loan to Agriculture (DBA) and Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Funds (ACGSF) were statistically significant in explaining Agricultural sector output in Nigeria within the period of study, with Deposit Money Bank Loan to Agriculture and Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Funds having the strongest effect Interest Rate (INTR) had an inverse and insignificant impact on agricultural output in Nigeria, The empirical result also revealed that Deposit Money Bank Loan to Agriculture and Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme Funds had direct significant impact on gross domestic product growth rate Based on the findings, it is therefore recommended that increased funding would fast track growth and development of the sector. There should be synergy hence various tiers of government, deposit money banks and international intervention and donor agencies in agricultural funding in Nigeria as this will make funding to the sector more efficient and effective in Nigeria Keywords: Economic Growth, Government expenditure, Agricultural growth.
