BANK CONSOLIDATION AND FINANCIAL INTERMEDIATION IN THE NIGERIAN BANKING SECTOR (1999-2014).

The Nigerian banking sector has experienced a lot of reforms in the recent past. One of such reforms is the bank consolidation exercise initiated by the Central Bank of Nigeria aimed at in repositioning the banking sector for a greater role in their intermediation function. This study examined the effect of Bank Consolidation on financial intermediation in the Nigerian Banking Sector in the pre and post consolidation era of 1999 to 2012. Primary data were obtained through the administration of structured questionnaire on respondents while secondary data were also sourced from the annual reports of these banks. Inferential statistical tools were employed to analyze collected data. The regression result on financial intermediation revealed that only monetary policy rate (P=0.000) and bank deposit (P=0.00465) were significant and positive. It is therefore concluded that the consolidation exercise has led to increased returns to banks and greater financial intermediation as more people now have access to banking facilities and opportunities. Equally, consolidation has widened the range of strategic alternatives available to the banks in Nigeria. It is recommended that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) being banks' supervisory/regulatory agent should intensify its effort towards effective monitoring in order to ensure greater financial intermediation Keywords: Bank, Consolidation, Intermediation, Nigeria.
