Abstract The study employs the literary theory of hermeneutics to expound the meaning and the thematic contents of a dialectic panegyrics (oríkì) found among the Ọ̀wọ̀ – Yorùbá South Western part of Nigeria. It also explicates the socio-cultural relevance of this poetic genre has been traditionally deployed for the identification and characterization of provenence of the people. Studies on this couched historical and cultural institution are deemed crucial with a view to articulating the cultural norms and values of the genre on the overall development of the Ọ̀wọ̀ – people as a race. He primary source include oral interviews with audio and video recordings of the artistics’ performances and other socio-cultural activities displayed during the rendition of the panegyrics. The secondary sources are books, journal articles and the Internet. The study found out that today, there are myriads of systematic problems in the deliverance and interpretation of messages that are inherent in Ọ̀wọ̀ panegyrics. Cultural events which support its growth and sustain the systematic development are being adversely attacked by spates of modernity. The result being that eloquent artists are fast passing on and the reception – consumption of those who could interpret the textual artifacts no more understand the whims of the art. Disenchantment therefore demean the tradition and the oríkì is drowsing off. The paper therefore calls for intensive documentation and preservation of this genre else it becomes moribund. | Àránsí Ayọ̀ọlá Ọládùnńkẹ́ | Vol.8 | journal | 2018-12-10 |
