Gender Participation in the Exploitation of Azara Barite Deposit, Nasarawa State, Nigeria,

That women are involved in Artisanal and Small Scale Mining (ASM) is stating the obvious; they are involved in the entire production value chain especially in ASM for precious metals and stones. There is no literature regarding women involvement in ASM for barite. This study, therefore, highlights their role in barite production in Azara, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The participation of women in Azara barite production has been investigated through site visit, operation monitoring, the use of a well-structured questionnaire, and interview. Result of the enumeration exercise carried out on the workforce in Azara barite mine showed that about 50% are women, out of which 30% are children averagely 12 years old. This study reveals that the productive role of the women is contractual and strictly for processing and transfer for excavated barite to designated locations for stacking; while their nonproductive roles are similar to ASM generally for mineral resources. Their services are not appropriately appreciated and without adequate provision for mine safety measures. Also, the engagement of female children in the mine has implications on the socioeconomic development of the nation and must be checked. Management of Azara barite mine should adopt and comply with mine safety regulations and encourage the women by paying appropriately for their services.
