Method of Improving the Rheological Properties of Potassium Based Bentonite Clay.

Potassium based bentonite clay have low rheological properties and this makes them unfit for use during drilling operations. Beneficiating this type of clay via a cation exchange process is quite challenging due to the position of potassium in the electrochemical series. The rheological properties of a potassium based clay was improved via a sodium and magnesium activation route. This route involves heating a mixture of potassium based bentonite clay, Na2CO3 and MgO solution at a temperature of 90 oC for a duration of 1hr. Addition of MgO lead to great improvement in the rheological properties of the clay. It was observed that heating of the reaction mixture activated the reaction process by aiding the exchange and substitution of ions. The activation process also lead to an improvement in the mud weight due to an increment in the water absorption capacity of the clay.
