AFRICAN CHRISTIANITY AND THE FIGHT AGAINST POVERTY: A MORAL DISCOURSE

Abstract Poverty is the state of living in a condition of penury and being poor. It is the lack and deprivation of the material things needed for human existence. It may also be defined as a pinching limitation in the possession of things necessary for human comfort or life. Moral obligation on the other hand represents the situation in which voluntariness does not explain what must be done, but that which must be done; i.e. that which one is bound to do (mandatory). However, the idea of associating morality with religion viz-a-viz Christianity and seeing it as the essential basis for the achievement of a healthy morality is as a result of the fact that religion according to scholars, is an inherent condition of human lives and human communities. This apparently, necessitated an academic exercise into the basis of poverty alleviation as a moral obligation in African Christianity. Textual Interpretative and Descriptive phenomenology through active participation are the composites of our research method. Keywords: Poverty, alleviation, moral obligation, African Christianity, Nigeria
