Assessment of social media use in teaching business education in Nigeria higher institutions

This study assessed the use of social media in teaching business education in Nigeria higher institutions. The study sought answers to the research questions among others what is the level of lecturers ' awareness of social media sites by year of teaching experience? And what are social media platforms used by lecturers in teaching business education in Nigeria higher institutions? Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. A total population of 56 lecturers was used for the study. Some 56 copies of the questionnaire were administered, and all the copies were retrieved and used for the study. Percentages mean, standard deviation and ranks were used to analyze the data collected. The findings of the study revealed that lecturers were aware of social media sites but are not used in teaching business education. It was concluded that graduates of business education would not be able to acquire the needed skills and competencies to be able to function effectively in the 2151 century world of work. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended among others that; there is the need for higher institution management to provide a number of training courses in social media which staff should be exposed to in order to respond to the training needs. Training needs assessment should be conducted by the respective departments, there is the need for business education teachers and students to divert the use of web 2.0 technologies from entertainment to educational uses.
