1 | Environmental sustainability: African womanist response in Ojaide’s The Activist. |
Western feminist linkage of the abuse of the natural environment to the domination, oppression and abuse of women is an overgeneralisation of the challenges facing both the woman and nature across cultures and places. It is the position of this paper that the present degradation of the natural environment stems mainly from economic considerations while the challenges faced by the women accrue mostly from cultural factors. This paper emphasises the African woman’s ingenuity in tackling challenges confronting her existence, and also establishes the African belief in the symbiotic relationship between man and the environment. This paper concludes that as the contemporary world assumes concern for gender equality and responsibility for environmental sustainability, ingenious solutions to these challenges from places such as Africa need to be recognized, adopted and adapted to diversify the global approaches to the challenges of gender equity and environmental balance.
