3. Aliyu, S.B. (2019): Interrogating place and ideology in AbdulRasheed Na’Allah’s poetry. ISSN: 2251-0095.

This paper posits that there is a relationship between the essence of a place and the ideological positioning of the people that inhabit it, especially in the ways their existence is conceptualised. This position draws from the fundamental Yoruba belief that iselu ni idalu. This loosely translates to mean that the peculiarities of a place influences the ways of the people. Place is thus taken in this study to be a frame for understanding the cultural, social, economic, political, and leadership conceptualisations of the people depicted in the selected poetry collections of AbdulRasheed Na’Allah. Therefore, in exploring Ilorin in the selected poetry of AbdulRasheed Na’Allah (Ilorin Praise Poetry and Ilorin O) there is the simultaneous interrogation of the essence of the people in terms of their perception of life and being and their ideology towards leadership. This paper explores Ilorin beyond just a setting or muse that evokes the poet’s creative tendencies. It goes further to interrogate the dominant perceptions of the people who are associated with that space. The sociological reading of poems selected from Na’Allah’s first two collections in the Ilorin trilogy, an interview the poet granted this researcher, and other scholarly literature provide insights into the poet’s understanding and depiction of Ilorin in his poems. It also foregrounds how spaces reflect the expression of agencies and how such expressions are passed on to generations. The study concludes that Na’Allah’s use of Ilorin is a discursive strategy that enunciates the ideology of communal living, of camaraderie, leadership qualities, and of knowledge based on Islamic culture.
