The study examined the effect of letters and sounds as a phonics method on preschool children reading abilities in Ilorin east local government area of Kwara state. The study adopted a pre-test, post-test control group quasi-experimental research design. All nursery two pupils both in the two private and public schools in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State were selected to participate in the study, simple random sampling technique was use to select the sample. The research instrument titled Preschool Reading Ability Scale (PRAS) was used for data collection. The reliability index of PRAS was determined using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). Seven research hypotheses were formulated and tested in the cause of the study at 0.05 level of significance with inferential statistics of Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and t-test. Recommendations were made based on the findings of this study.
