PRINCIPLES OF GOOD GOVERNANCE IN ISLAM: AN EXEMPLARY GUIDE FOR THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY

Abstract Islam is a complete code of life. It guides people in all aspects of their lives ranging from how to behave inside the house, business and government. Islam is a perfect religion to follow if you want to implement good governance in your home, office, state and country. Islam demands its followers to create a just society, the core purpose of which is to look after the welfare and betterment of the people who constitute the society. Both the Quran and Sunnah have provided some principles in the areas of constitutional affairs that cannot be omitted from any government system. Islamic state is responsible to look after the poor, needy, orphans, destitute, widows and other such people. Islam insists to enthroning such a person who is knowledgeable, compassionate, brave and most importantly honest. In Islam, the person with the highest rank in the society that is the ruler is also the most responsible for the welfare of that society. Virtually everyone can bring the performance and integrity of the ruler in question if such a ruler refuses to perform according to the teachings of Islam. The model of good governance offered by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is unmatched in all respects and the policies pursued by his followers especially the first four caliphs (R.A.) offer great insight for the modern world as well. This paper therefore examines good governance in accordance with Qur`an and Sunnah as well as the laid down principles of good governance in Islam.
