RE-ORIENTATATION OF MUSLIM UMMAH THROUGH JUMU'AH SERMONS: THE ROLE OF IMAMS.

Abstract The contemporary Muslim society is observably in serious need of reorientation and counseling, owing to notable moral weakness and amazing violation of some Islamic rulings on several issues. It is believed that the anormally could be trashed through the instrumentality of Khutubah al-Jumu'ah. Therefore, the main objective of the paper is to identify with weekly Jumu'at sermons as a potent tool for re-orientating the Muslim Ummah avis-avi- the Islamic moral values and creating more awareness in the practice of Islam as expected of committed Muslims. To achieve this objective, a number of Jumu'at Imams are subjected to appraisal in order to unfold the extent they have gone in serving the main purposes of which Khutubtu 'l-Jumu'ah is introduced. This was facilitated by field research work carried out in some selected Jumu'at mosques. The research findings revealed that each sermoner is in dare need to improve himself, knowledge wise from time to time by making himself up to date in term of current affairs. Self improvement will assist him in enriching the quality of his sermons to adequately serve the purpose of re-orientation of worshippers for improvement in their devotional act and related religious activities. Conclusively, the need of re-orientations of the Muslim Ummah cannot be overemphasized. On a final note, this paper recommends that Muslim society would do well when it sponsors refresher courses for the Imams in order to equip them adequately for the task of counseling and re-orientating the Muslim Ummah.
