Corporate social responsibility and performance of deposit money banks In Nigeria

This paper examines the impact of corporate social responsibility on the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria. The annual financial statements of the DMBs listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange were used for this study which covers a period of eight (08) years from 2005 to 20012. Panel date for the selected DMBs were generated and analysed using generalised least square (GLS) as a method of estimation, in which a series of regression analysis was applied on corporate performance as a dependent variable as well as CSR, the independent variables. The results showed that there is a statistically significant positive relationship between CSR and corporate performance of the DMBs in Nigeria using ROA for the period under study. However, the study concludes that CSR has no significant impact on ROE of DMBs in Nigeria for the period under study. The work concludes that statistically, CSR has significant impact on the performance of listed DMBs in Nigeria. This means that DMBs in Nigeria should invest adequate fund on CSR activities in order to enhance their level of performance. It recommends that DMBs in Nigeria should invest reasonable amount of money on CSR activities since it has positive impact on their performance.
