Impact of ownership structure on the performance of Listed Healthcare Firms in Nigeria

This study is conducted to analyse the impact of ownership structure on the performance of firms in the Healthcare sector of Nigerian stock Exchange during the period 2003 to 2013. Ownership structure is one of the corporate governance mechanisms that have been a focus of many researchers and scholars for few decades. Despite that, there is alack of prior studies that examine these relationships in the healthcare firms in Nigeria. So, the main objective of this study was to bridge this gap and try to enrich existing literature. Ownership structure is represented by managerial shareholdings and institutional shareholdings. Return on assets and return on equity are used as proxies for firm performance. Panel data technique was employed to test the significant relationship among the variables. Results showed that both institutional shareholdings and managerial shareholdings have no significant impact on firm performance. Our results suggested that firm performance does not depend on ownership structure of the studied firms. The study therefore concludes that ownership structure has no significant impact on the performance of the firms listed in the healthcare firms in Nigeria. The study recommends that firms in the healthcare sector should use any form of ownership structure in their firms as it does not have any significant impact on their performance. Keywords: ownership structure, managerial shareholdings, institutional shareholdings, ROA, ROE
