Negation in Usẹn

NEGATION IN USẸN Ameze Franca OGBEIFUN and Olabode ABIMBOLA Abstract The study of negation remains relevant in the study of linguistics as all languages of the world possess this feature. In some languages, negation is expressed through morphological inflections on verbs, while others express negation using free negative morphemes. Also, there are those languages wherein negative morphemes do not necessarily correspond to a semantic negation but a combination of such element. This study examines the concept of negation in Usẹn, a South Eastern dialect of Yorùbá language spoken in Edo State. The aim is to identify the various negative markers in Usẹn, and also examine the interaction of these markers with tense and aspect system of the dialect. Findings revealed that negation in Usẹn is categorized with languages in which every negative element/morpheme corresponds to a semantic negation, just like we have in Yorùbá language. Keyword: Usẹn, Negation, Tense, Aspect.
