PROFESSIONAL STATUS OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION WORKFORCE IN SOUTH-WEST, NIGERIA

The quality of early care and education (ECE) has been linked to the quality of teachers to whom children’s care and education have been entrusted into. It is now widely recognized that the value of investing in well-qualified caregivers to care for and educate children is an important part of the strategies designed to establish the foundations of health and education during the early years. Teaching children involves special skills which require special training of teachers. This study investigated the professional status of the early childhood education workforce in South west Nigeria. This study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population comprised of all preschool teachers and para-professionals working with children in South-west Nigeria. A self-designed instrument titled " Early Childhood Education Workforce in South-west" with a reliability coefficient of 0.76 and an Interview schedule on ECE workforce which was face-and content-validated were used for data gathering. The findings of the study revealed that the early childhood education workforce in South-west Nigeria had low level of skill acquisition (WA = 1.71). The teachers did not register with their professional body. Furthermore, the level of inspection of the early childhood education workforce by the Ministries of Health and Education was low. Based on the above findings, it was recommended that the early childhood education workforce should be given regular training to prepare them for the demands of their job. Officials of the ministries of Health and Education were also encouraged to intensify the inspection of the early childhood education workforce.
