PUPIL-RELATED VARIABLES AS PREDICTORS OF ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS IN ILORIN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KWARA STATE

The study investigated pupil-related variables as predictors of academic achievement in mathematics in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State. Survey research design was adopted for this study. 480 primary six pupils were randomly selected. Two instruments designed by the researchers were used for data gathering-Questionnaire on Pupil-related Variables (QPV) and Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT). Both QPV (a = 0.77) and MAT (KR 20 = 0.72) were validated and tested for reliability with Cronbach's Alpha and Kuder-Richardson Formular 20 (KR20) respectively. Analysis of data was carried out using multiple linear regression. The findings showed that there was positive relationship between pupils ' locus of control (r = .445), pupils' attitude (r = .574) and pupils ' academic achievement. The predictor variables were significant in their composite contribution to the prediction of academic achievement in mathematics (F (2477) = 151.732; R = .624, R2 = .389, Adj. R² = .386). About 39 % of the variation in pupils' academic achievement in mathematics was accounted for by the predictor variables. Also, the predictor variables were significant in their relative contribution to the prediction of academic achievement in mathematics. Attitude of the pupils has the highest prediction rate of achievement academic achievement in Mathematics. Based on the findings, it was recommended that pupils should be helped to develop positive attitude towards mathematics. When pupils have positive attitude towards mathematics, they will find it easy and feel comfortable to study mathematics and by extension improve their academic achievement in the subject.
