Intertextuality in Discourse: An appraisal of the Intertectual Features in Obasanjo and Iyabo Obasanjo's Open Letters

This paper explores the internal and external relation of texts and how these intertextual relations in some way, shape meaning in the open letter of General Obasanjo to President Muhammadu Buhari and that of Iyabo Obasanjo to General Olusegun Obasanjo. Both letters were divided into ten extracts which were subjected to intertextual analysis using intertextuality as a theoretical frame work in order to explicate text creation on the one hand and to demonstrate patterns of textual relations in the texts under consideration on the other. At the end of the analysis of the data, it was found that different linguistic elements, such as quotation, summary, irony, repetition, among others could be drawn upon to enhance intertextual relations in the course of producing texts or discourses. It also became evident that interdiscursivity was drawn to service more than any other means of intertextual relation in the two open letters. It is, therefore, concluded that most texts usually have elements of other texts in them. By implication, the existence of some texts is usually as a result of the elements that are contained in other texts which are similar to those in the text at hand.
