LIVELIHOOD EFFECTS OF PARTICIPATION IN A SOCIAL PROTECTION INTERVENTION: EVIDENCE FROM FARMERS ASSISTED PROGRAMME OF LOWER NIGER RIVER BASIN DEVELOPMENTS AUTHORITY, NIGERIA

The study examined perceived effect of participation in the Farmers Assisted Programme (FAP) of the Lower Niger River Basin Developments Authority (LNRBDA) on the livelihood of rural beneficiaries in Kwara State of Nigeria. A total of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents were selected from four communities of the participating Local Government Areas of the state. Interview schedule was used for data collection. While frequency counts, percentages, and mean scores were used to summarize data collected, principal component (factor) analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used for inferential deduction. The findings showed that about 41% of the beneficiaries perceived the FAP to have had ‘high effect’ on their livelihood outcome. The factor analysis revealed two main categories of benefits associated with farmers’ participation in the FAP namely: ‘basic production inputs’ and ‘productivity optimizing inputs’. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that age (b=0.055), farming experience (b= -0.072), marital status (b= -3.28), source of credit (b= -2.601) and basic production inputs (b=1.014) had significant influence on the livelihood outcomes of the participating farmers. The study concluded that the farmers assisted programme as a social intervention effort of the Lower Niger River Basin Authority, impacted positively on the livelihoods of the programme beneficiaries thereby representing a substantial social protection net for the targeted rural populace.
