ABSTRACT This study examined the roles of cooperatives in enhancing productive agriculture and livelihoods of famers in Nigeria. Using desk review approach, complemented by key informant interview and analysis of the National Cooperative Baseline 1 Survey (NCBS) data where appropriate, it examined cooperative principles and types of agricultural cooperatives, dwelling on how the cooperative principles could be exploited for efficient agricultural cooperatives and consequent higher agricultural productivity. It then undertook a historical review of cooperatives in Nigeria, delineating roles of government and its institutions in shaping cooperative societies. Thereafter, it examined the roles of cooperative in enhancing agricultural production and livelihoods of famers, buttressing with relevant literature how such roles have been documented in different regions of the country. The concluding section looked at way the forward and suggestions for further studies.
