A Preliminary Report of Community Archaeology outreach Experience at the College of Education Archaeological site.

Abstract This paper presents a preliminary Community Archaeology outreach experience conducted by the Archaeology unit of the Kwara State University during her students‟ annual archaeological fieldwork season. The fieldwork was carried out within the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, which is located within an area referred to as Okesuna in the past. The outreach was necessitated by the rich histories, visible material remains, and location of the study area which houses the College of Education as well as a secondary, and a primary school. The paper discussed the goals of the outreach in relation to how history and archaeology were utilised to disseminate information to the public about the study area. The outreach provided an excellent opportunity to explain to our audience the archaeological and historical research work undertaken by the research team and archaeology students. The outreach also sensitised them on the historic significance of the archaeological artifacts found within the study area, particularly as it relates to the inter-weaving of aesthetic, cultural and historic heritage of Ilorin community in the past, and to represent research-enriched teaching for our students of archaeology. Finally, the outreach enabled individuals to better understand the link with their past and appreciate the need to preserve their cultural heritage materials. The outreach, however, provided an awareness opportunity for members of the public and increased their appreciation of Archaeology as a discipline and the work that we carried out.
