The Need for Adopting Modern Techniques of Teaching to Improve Arabic Education in Nigeria

This paper examines the strategies needed to be applied to better the teaching and learning of Arabic Language in Nigeria. It starts with a brief historical survey of the language, its introduction and development, its fortunes and challenges and how it has today became a recognised discipline in all the levels of education in Nigeria. The paper studies the meanings and characteristics of the terms: method, technique, strategy and approach in the field of teaching and learning to see how they are related and to examine whether the above terms could be qualified as modern or old. Various methods, techniques, etc. of institutions of Arabic in Nigeria are evaluated to see the level of achievements of their aims or otherwise. Thus, it discusses a number of strategies and methods considered to be modern, more effective and productive in the teaching of foreign languages and ways of applying them in deriving maximum benefits inherent in them to improve the Arabic education in Nigeria. The paper concludes with recommendations and suggestions that are capable of improving the standard of teaching and learning Arabic in Nigeria.
