An Interface between Phonetics and Phonology in Yoruba Language Acquisition

Phonetics is as important to language acquisition as phonology. Using optimality theory, an analysis of the uniqueness of these acquisitions is transparently and economically done. This study of the sound structure of the acquisition of a Yoruba child involves two crucial components: the sound segments of the language (both segmental features and suprasegmental features) and the way the child combines the sound segments to form words. Just like the adult speakers of Yoruba language, the Yoruba child sets of sounds include the vowels, the consonants, and the tones. The collected data of a longitudinal format is analysed using the Optimality Theory (OT). Phonological processes like consonant harmony, consonant insertion, devoicing, stopping, consonant deletion, etc., are considered from OT perspective. The paper shows the potential adequacy of the theory to Yoruba language acquisition.
