ASSESSMENT OF QUALITY OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION SERVICES IN MORO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF KWARA

A study was conducted in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State in 2012, to assess quality of extension services provided to farmers. The survey was undertaken by administering structured questionnaire to 30 farmers each from 5 villages in the Local Government. The aim was to determine the quality of extension with a view to improving it. Results show that most of the farmers (28.4%) were in the age group of 21-30 years. A greater percentage of the farmers (53.4%) were subsistence farmers cultivating between 1-2 hectares (ha) of land. Although extension services were provided long time ago as reported by 70.4% of the respondents, this was mainly done by the non-governmental organizations (NGOs). It was also found that needs assessment were not conducted before developing the extension packages for farmers (63.7%). However the quality of extension services developed was rated as good (51.0%). The extension messages have resulted in improved skills (89.3%) and productivity of the farmers (63.3%). It was recommended that there is need to further improve extension service in the Local Government to ensure the achievement of the desired objectives.
