INFLUENCE OF MATHEMATICS ANXIETY ON ATTITUDE TOWARDS MATHEMATICS AMONG STUDENTS WITH MATHEMATICS DIFFICULTIES IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN ILORIN METROPOLIS, KWARA STATE NIGERIA

This study X-rayed the influence of mathematics anxiety on attitude towards Mathematics among students with mathematics difficulties in llorin metropolis, Kwara State Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The respondents were three hundred senior Secondary School II students with mathematics difficulties which were purposively selected. Three research instruments were used for data collection. The Pupil rating Scale (r=0.72), mathematics anxiety rating scale (0.91), attitude towards mathematics inventory (r=0.88). Two research questions were stated and three hypotheses were raised. Data gathered were analysed using percentage, mean, regression and t-test. The study showed that mathematics anxiety level of students with mathematics difficulties was high (mean =3.1), it was also revealed that students with mathematics difficulties have a negative attitude towards mathematics. The study showed that mathematics anxiety influence the attitude of students with mathematics towards mathematics (rcal=,-0.46 R2= 0.21, P<0.05), there was no significant difference between mathematics anxiety level of male and female students (tcal=0.15, F= 0.14, P>0.05); there was no significant difference on the attitude of male and female students (tcal=0.07, F= 0.25, P>0.05. Based on the findings, the study recommended that teachers should encourage students with mathematics difficulties to build self confidence in them as this will help them in learning mathematics.
