Sharia Controversy and the Nigerian Constitution: An Ecclesiastical Response

Nigeria as a nation is plagued with many problems. One of these is the various forms of Sharia agitation by the northern section of the country. The refusal to implement the Sharia Law, which isat variance with the constitutional provisions, by the agitators, has resulted more often than not in lack of peace and progress both corporately and individually. This paper examines Sharia as a concept and its viability in a secular setting like Nigeria. It adopts analytical, historical and exegetical methods by analyzing past religious conflicts in Nigeria, as well as exposition of related Bible passages. It concludes that the superiority complex of the concept makes its implementation impossible without violence. It recommends that to defend oneself in the face of any form of intimidation, particularly religious, is not anti-spiritual as some would want the Christians to believe.
